I loved this one. It’s set in a large world the author has created and I’m definitely going to be reading more.
There’s only so much detail you can glimpse from a novella, but the setting seems to a big interplanetary world, set in the future where a lot of the human population are cyborgs. There are other interesting alien races, the main character is a sort of long lived bird person who meditates through dancing and is not a fan of technology. Another race is a virtual race that I couldn’t begin to explain but the sort of individual from that race that participates in the story is made out of 3 faces that do different jobs, one of which is interacting with physical people.
The story deals with the morality and struggles of trying to resurrect an extinct species, in hopes it will once again protect the galaxy against a powerful foe.
I liked the way information was revealed, and the main character is very interesting. The moral dilemma and the technical solutions were good, and it ended with more of a mystery, though not cliffhanger style.
