This tag centers around the series The Tarot Sequence by KD Edwards, the first book is The Last Sun and the sequel, The Hanged Man, will be out on December 17th, 2019. You don’t have to have read The Last Sun to do this tag, although if you haven’t, go read it now, I’ll wait. Everyone I know that’s tried this book has loved it and read it as fast as possible.
This tag has been created by #TeamDeath. Thanks to Lisa @ Way Too Fantasy for putting together this tag, and Tammy @ Books, Bones & Buffy, keikii @ keikii eats books, Matty @Mattyfp1 who helped.
When you fill this out, please remember to link back to the person who tagged you and to give credit to the folks above. Thanks!
disclaimer: I’m very indecisive and choices are hard, so this kinda got a little bit away from me
RUNE SAINT JOHN, LORD SUN
“Walk down the wrong street in this city and you could be gutted for your shoelaces. You could have a dagger stuck in your eye because you used the wrong adverb. The inside of a person’s head is a deep, dark place…”
A BOOK THAT LEFT YOU A LITTLE BROKEN ON THE INSIDE
Vita Nostra by Marina Dyachenko & Sergey Dyachenko, left me hella broken inside when I read it. It got completely stuck in my head, every night I was reading it, and a couple after, I had intense weird dreams like I was in the book. Which is related to the subject of the book, kinda.
BRAND
“Don’t smile at me,” Brand said. “You’re still a dumb-ass.”
A BOOK THAT IS LIKE YOUR (SNARKY) BEST FRIEND
Imaginary Corpse by Tyler Hayes fits the best friend part of this request too well for me to be able to pick anything else, it’s balm for the soul. It’s got so much positive energy I can’t exactly call it snarky, for snark try one of my two favourite snarky Liches: Mid-Lich Crisis by Steve Thomas or Changing Faces by Sarah Lin. Ok yes I have 3 books here
QUINN
He said, only a little shakily, “Quinn told me to pass along the warning. I’m not sure what rosy future Quinn prefers to see, but in the one he likes best, you and Brand are dear to him.”
A BOOK FEATURING A PROPHECY
Right so I first thought of “Cand penele rosii vor plange” by Lucian Dragos Bogdan, which is sci fi novella that does a beautiful job of playing with prophecy and turning it on its head. But it’s only available in Romanian, so I guess most of you can’t read it. So, Wyrd Sisters by Sir Terry Pratchett is one of my favourite books, and it also does a great job playing with prophecy and destiny on top of being a lovely and funny book, and much closer to Quinn’s sweetness.
MAX
“Max is fucking flooding me with texts.”
“Like what?”
“I need to do laundry. Is it okay if I try to fix the washer machine? Oops, I didn’t fix the washer machine, where are the towels? I used up all the towels. Is it okay if I eat a Devil Dog? Oops, I ate all the Devil Dogs.”
“He ate my Devil Dogs?”
A BOOK FEATURING A FOUND FAMILY
I’m not sure exactly where the lines are drawn between found family and best friends but The Golem and The Djinni by Helen Wecker was the first that came to mind, due to the very strong bond that forms between the two title characters.
ADDAM
He finally said, “You interest me, Hero. I’m fairly sure you saved my life and a simple thank you seems so small. I don’t know whether I should pay you handsomely, or invite you into the shower with me.”
A BOOK THAT GETS EXCITING HALFWAY THROUGH
I’m really bad with names and especially when there are multiple families, houses, etc, doing things. So for about the first 30% of Fortune’s Fool by Angela Boord I was just confused and trying to keep up, but once I was able to focus strictly on Kira’s personal story I got really into it.
LADY DEATH
Her frost magic rose, forming shining rivulets of ice above the veins of her hand.
A BOOK THAT LEFT YOU COLD
I’ve got two again, sorry not sorry. And I’m not gonna name books I didn’t like, I like shining light on books I loved. So books set in the cold:
Spirit Caller series by Krista D Ball, a rural urban fantasy set in Newfoundland , a cold windy place, but these characters left me warm inside. I’m putting Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik in as a runner up, cause I’ve got one of Krista’s books for my next character as well and I don’t want you thinking I’m some sort of shameless shill.
LORD TOWER
For a moment–just a moment–there was an expression on his face that I entirely mistook for pride, only wondering in hindsight if maybe it had been triumph.
A BOOK FEATURING A MENTOR
A Magical Inheritance by Krista D. Ball is a great book with awesome Victorian women and a multiple badass mentors, MC’s dearly departed uncle who only appears in fond memories, her aunt a respectable and powerful widow, who fills his role after his death, and the dearly departed Mrs. Egerton who appears only as ghost, instructing the MC in magic.
LADY JUSTICE
Lady Justice’s eyes were not normal. I’d heard this before.
They shifted and changed, their shape and colour stolen from nearby memories. Even more unnerving was my implausible recognition of all the variations.
A BOOK WITH A SINISTER SECRET
The Mage-Born Anthology by Kayleigh Nicol is a short story collection about 7 royal bastards finding out that they are Mage-Born and having to hide this secret to save their lives. I really liked the characters in this one, it’s sort of a prequel for Sorcerous Rivalry.
That’s it! Hope you enjoyed it and don’t mind my picking extra books too much!
I’m not sure I’ve figured this tagging thing out yet, but I’d like to tag eriophora @Black Forest Basilisk Para @To Other Worlds and Kristen @Superstrardrifter
