Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in.
This week’s theme is Ten Books I Enjoyed But Rarely Talk About, so I thought back (=scrolled through my Goodreads, I have a very bad memory) and looked at pre-blog books and non-fantasy books
The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip
This beautiful tale of a woman but just wants to be left the fuck alone on top of her mountain with her pets, but keeps getting dragged into politics and war, really resonated with me. I loved the writing, and I felt like I got her.
Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay
Another one for team beautiful writing. I really liked how this book made me examine my own very negative sentiments about my country.
The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan
Ok I feel like I do still talk about this a fair bit. But a victorian-like woman natural historian exploring the world and studying dragons is just immensely cool in my book.
Temeraire by Naomi Novik
I read the first few books in this series a while back, and I really should finish them. I understand the ending is not so good, but the first few books, and the concept of The Napoleonic Wars but make it with dragons, are awesome.
Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch
This was the series that really got me back into reading after a couple of years when I’d been reading less and less. It’s so fun and fast paced.
Arhanghelul Raul by Ovidiu Eftimie
I would love to be able to give this book to all my comic-fantasy loving friends. Alas it’s only available in Romanian. It’s a satire about saving the world from demons that perfectly captures Eastern-European post-communist bureaucracy
The non-fantasy books:
Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void
by Mary Roach
This is such a fun look at the weirder side of space flight science. I am not knowledgeable, at all, in this field, but I was able to understand and be entertained throughout.
The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide
A short, sweet and very delicate tale about a couple and a cat that wanders into their life. Very slice of life.
Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
This one actually helped with my anxiety, because I can identify certain thought patterns, maybe not always wrong, but certainly worth questioning.
Bossypants by Tina Fey
I listened to this one after binging 30 Rock, and I liked it so much I went through a series of fun autobiographies by comedians after it.
