Stacking the Shelves and Sunday post: #BlackSFFathon edition

10:06 am | | Comments 17

This will be the first in a series of posts where I try to squeeze 3 bookish events into 2 weeks of blogging. Really going for overachieving this week as I’m linking up with:

Deep breath, here we go, it’s gonna be a long one

BlackSFFathon

BlackSFFathon is a readathon for Black-authored speculative fiction. Taking place 10/18-10/31. Hosted by @ThistleVerse, @locpressedbooks, @ndamalicampbell, @Luciereads, and @noriathereader

They have a bingo board, and that’s the sort of thing that automatically summons me from halfway across the internet, because I love book bingos
Prompts starting at upper left corner going from left to right: LGBT+ main character, social justice oriented, gods as characters, horror, group book, not set on Earth, disability rep, author not from US or Canada, love
And short fiction is eligible, and they’ve provided a helpful list, so that’s probably what I’m going to be reading next weekend. WordPress is refusing to acknowledge this twitter link for some reason, but this tweet chain has more info about the challenge and the rec list: https://twitter.com/blacksffathon/status/1307754909622730752

New books & #BlackSFFathon TBR

I ordered these books back in August, and FINALLY THEY ARE HERE:
I ordered most of these for the prompts in the Black Lives Matter Book Bingo Challenge but luckily Maya and the Rising Dark seems to fit Gods as Characters so I can use it for #BlackSFFathon too. I also think I can use Raybearer for Not Set on Earth and Love, which is great because there is no way on earth that Raybearer is not the next book I’m starting. Look at how gorgeous it is:
On Audible I got Redemption in Indigo & The Galaxy Game, both by Karen Lord. The Galaxy Game is included in the audible plus selection, so when I say I got it, I mean free download. They’re both BLM bingo books.
If I start feeling brave I might go ahead and give Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark a chance, I’ve heard great stuff about it, but I don’t normally read horror. And it would fit Horror and Social Justice Oriented on the #BlackSFFathon.
Only one kindle purchase this month and it’s The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste, the BlackSFFathon group read, and it nicely fits my Middle Grade square on BLM Book Bingo, which I still haven’t read.
22859559
I also might read The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps by Kai Ashante Wilson for LGBT+ MC, I’ve got the novella on my kindle.
Also, finally arrived, but unconnected to any bookish event, my many Valdemar books, by Mercedes Lackey:
  • Oathbound
  • Oathbreakers
  • Oathblood
  • Mage Winds
  • Mage Wars (with Larry Dixon)
And the main reason I wanted to do stacking the shelves this week …. drumrolls! … NEW SHELVES! Yes, I bought more books than we could fit so we had to buy more shelves. It’s super exciting, hopefully, I won’t fill them up in one go. Really hoping we get to put them up today! They’re just 3 plain white shelves from Ikea, but I am super excited to move my books there from the top of cabinets and under my nightstand.
And that’s it, other than Black Girl Unlimited by Echo Brown on audible for my BLM Book Bingo and maybe Ring Shout I don’t have any other book purchases planned. I might, maybe, allow myself to get 1-2 r/fantasy book club books, maybe. But my shelf-defying TBR at home really needs to be read.

This Week on the Blog

YES, THAT IS 9 REVIEWS POSTED IN ONE WEEK! Which leaves me only 12 behind. Which is less climactic than I was hoping for, but my former list of 17 did not include the novellas apparently. No, wait, 13, I finished a book this week.

Read/Currently reading

I finished The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez I really liked it, even though it turned out very different from what I was expecting. I’ll be reviewing this one next month for Sci-Fi Month

And what am I currently reading? Far too many books at once is what I’m currently reading.

Planned for next week

On Monday I want to do a post of Spooktastic Recs for Spooktastic Reads hosted by the people who organized Wyrd and Wonder, which I loved. It’s gonna be a challenge seeing how I tend to avoid horror, but I’ve got a few books I read and a lot of books I’d loved to read if I were less of scaredy-cat.

On Can’t Wait Wednesday I’ll mention a couple of my most anticipated books by Black authors, because it’s still Black Speculative Fiction month.

On Friday, ish, I’ll post my review of Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, which is amazing and one of my new favorite books.

And then next Sunday I’ll talk about what I’ve been doing for the OcTBR Challenge thus concluding by readathon marathon.

Lookit how planned and organized I am, who would’ve thunk.

Other goings-on

I’ve continued playing Hades like a woman obsessed, and I even managed to beat the final boss! Fair and square!
Our Dungeons and Lasers terrain has arrived, we’ll be using it for Dungeons and Dragons, and we’ve been experimenting with painting them. The bf and I seem to have different artistic visions but we’ve found the middle ground. And ordered lots of paint. And spray painted our walkway, a bit. That was him, not me.
Work was hectic this week, we had 2 3 hour webinars that I had to pay a lot of attention to, and I’m not good at pay attention to this sort of thing. I also ended up going to the post office 4 times before I managed to get my books (they changed the schedule but didn’t update it everywhere online).

I’m looking for novellas that can count for the Fraterfest Read-a-thon and I forgot that Sliver in the Wood is a novella! It’s on by TBR list. I had a look at your review, beautiful and I am going to see if I can get hold of the book.

Hope you will have a good week, good luck with your hectic schedule!

Here’s my The Sunday Post #15

    1. Dianthaa says:

Awesome, hope you like it! Hope you have a great week and thanks for stopping by

  2. The BlackSFFathon event sounds like great fun. I am a person who loves to do bingo boards, especially a blackout, so that will be a good challenge, I think.

I remember reading a lot about The Jumbies some years back—maybe it was a Texas Bluebonnet book?—so that should be good.

Nine reviews! Great week for you.

I love bingo boards, I think this is my 4th this year. I’ve got so much I want read, it helps me organize them.
I haven’t heard of The Jumbies before, I don’t really pay a lot of attention to middle grade books, but I’ve really enjoyed all the one I’ve read recently, so I’m looking forward to it!

  3. Wow thanks for all the new recs! And thanks for sharing the BlackSSFathon-another new to me event!

I love the sound of the Black SFFathon – it sounds fantastic! Raybearer looks stunning – I hope you enjoy it. And I’m really excited to see that you have a copy of Tooth and Claw – one of my all-time favourite reads. I hope you have a great reading week:))

    1. Dianthaa says:

I don’t know how I’ve managed to make it so far without reading Tooth and Claw, it sounds perfect for me. Well, soon now, I’ll see how I can squeeze it in between reading challenges.

      1. sjhigbee says:

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, Dianthaa – Jo Walton is always worth reading:))

Thank you! I’m starting Raybearer tonight, if I’m not too tired, we painted a lot of terrain today lol, wouldn’t have said that could make me tired but well

  8. Good luck with the BlackSFFathon
That terrain looks good, I’ll be sharing the link with my son who plays a regular game
