After I wrote up this draft I realized the prompt refered to covers but oh well, also I didn’t get to post it yesterday so double oh well.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

One of my favorite books from last year and of course I fell in love with it right away. It the book and especially in the begining Bree is dealing with the loss of her mom, in way that I thought was so well done and relatable to my experience.

We Ride the Storm by Devin Madson

Whichever way you spin it, Devin Madson writes some amazing openers. The initial self-pub version led with “It’s harder to sever a head than people think.” and the Orbit version added a new chapter that starts with “They tried to kill me four times before I could walk.” Either way, great, murder right from the start, gripping, love it. And yes, the book keeps it up.

Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston

This book hooked me from the start and it made me feel just like I was 9 again, stepping into a magical world for the first time.

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

I really wasn’t expecting this Middle Grade/Young Adult book to start off with a dead body so immediately I thought what the hell is going on, I’m in.

Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater

This one won me over with pure charm, it’s such a delight to read and the main character is lovely.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Here it was the atmosphre, in the first few lines we learn that Yadriel has been living in the cemetry his whole life, and now he wasnts to perform a rite in front of Lady Death. YES! I did want to read more of that.

Dread Nation by Justina Ireland

Similarly to We Ride the Storm this starts with the MC talking about how people have been trying to kill her since she was a child. I guess I really like that trope? Jane’s voice is also amazing and I loved her as a main character, especially with the first person narration.
