The Wheel of Time Turns … a little too quickly – spoilery thoughts for WoT episodes 1-3

I watched. I have thoughts. They’re gonna come off as nitpicky, I’m enjoying it and I’ll keep watching, but too me it’s fine not great. There are a few things that worked really poorly for me so ofc I’m tempted to go on and on and on and on about those. There is no logical sequence to these:

Spoilers for all 3 episodes

  • The fridging OMG that was the worst. First of all why add that at all? Just why are we still doing this? And even as it goes, this was just a terrible example. We don’t get to meet fridge-wife at all, she’s not in any other scenes, she barely gets a mention, she’s not a character, you could replace her with a beloved lamp Perrin knocks over!. It’s like they didn’t even try to hide the fact that this character exists for one reason and one reason only. And making Perrin kill her by accident, come on I also hate how it has to change his entire character from now, all his brooding now isn’t gonna be just about being away from home and all, it’s also always gonna have to be about this. Unless they forget it around episode 5
  • One quick thing I did like was showing the ancient-modern ruined city taken over by nature I thought that was a great example of adapting info that’s not iirc immediately obvious in the book to something you can tell by just showing one shot
  • Visually I do quite like it, the scenery is lovely, the lighting doesn’t make me squint all the time, so that’s good. The costumes … some I like some I don’t. The cloaks are great, not the white ones, those are awful. Moraine’s little shoulder thingy looks neat. I think for all the main cast their costumes fit their characters well. But the aes sedai outfits we’ve seen so far … have you never heard of embelishment? nicer fabrics? I dunno … something … they seem to flat, similar for the white cloaks.
  • The pacing. I can’t belive I’m saying this about WoT but it seems to rushed to me. We don’t get to know the characters, I feel like Rand and Perrin don’t have much going for them except brooding at this point, and I feel the lack of being in their head. Especially in ep 3 with Mat, when he starts being more of an ass, should we be able to tell already that it’s the dagger doing that?
  • We’ve seen so much of the world already, I don’t feel like there was any need to bring in the whitecloaks, to offer exposition about the aiel, all the places Dana name dropped it seems too much too soon
  • that reminds, in ep3 I love Dana, I thought her entire part was very well done, we got to know her, then get suspicious, then we learn about darkfriends that all worked well
  • but I cannot with Thom’s voice idk it does not seem melodic. I like the slightly rock star vibes, I can get behind that
  • It’s kinda weird to me that we had so much kissing and non-spanking related nudity in ep 1, but then we had everything and the kitchen sink in eps 1 so idk
  • I love Lan, he shows excellent eyebrow game in ep1, and ads some gravitas to his brooding than the younger kids have yet to master
  • I like Nynaeve too, I loved it when she faced off a trolloc twice her size with a tiny dagger and then when we saw how the trolloc had dragged her away by her braid I snorted, tugging intensified
  • I also like the bit about braids in the opening
  • The song they all song in ep2 was a cool song and nice way to fill in a little backstory
  • Pretty sure the wolves are actually dogs but they’re good dogs and I love them already
  • I felt dissapointed that Shadar Logoth was so rushed, I still remember that so well from the books and here it just zoomed past. at the end of ep 2 we’d already passed through Moria and the Hobbits had split up
  • Do love the dynamic between Lan and Nynaeve “oh you actually tried to kill me” yeah you’re kinda into it we could tell
  • Almost forgot, I really wish they had used the prologue in ep 1, it’s such a good hook, they kinda tried with Thom’s song to make up for it but nah

I’ve never read these but I’ve been curious about the show, so this was fun to read. 🙂

Me yesterday seeing this pop up in blog feed: Oh, I might watch it at some point, shouldn’t give myself spoilers

Me ten minutes ago: Don’t be a silly goose how can there be spoilers for an adaptation of something you know inside and out

Me reading the first line: What the actual fuck no what is this fresh horseshit?

It was soooo bad, in every way I can think of.
I did see a comment from Sanderson today in our megathread saying basically “told them so” which on the one hand funny, but makes it even worse that they went ahead with it anyway

      1. peatlong says:

        goes to look

sees the stuff about Mat as well

sees the stuff about Rafe’s vision being playing into ensemble rather than the early focus on Rand

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear. I guess good on them on being ambitious and trying a lot of changes… no wait, I don’t mean that.

        1. Dianthaa says:

I like the idea of an ensemble cast but not like this. I’m not the biggest fan of the series so I don’t mind changes, but some are just baaaaaad writing

  3. peatlong says:

I feel like it pretty much has to be an ensemble cast, but introducing them is not something you can rush through easily.

Oh well. Can’t win them all.
