Spoilers included lower down
I just finished 1899 on Netlix and it was such a weird and compelling ride I wanna squee about it at other people. Here’s the trailer for it. It’s a creepy mystery featuring a missing steamship in 1899.
It’s really hard to talk about this without going into spoilers, so I’m gonna hide most of this, but generally, I loved it. I spent most of it confused but highly intrigued. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to watch it, just put on the 1st episode and then couldn’t really stop. There’s a lot of stuff that’s weird, but also a lot of stuff that looks like a hint, so I found it very satisfying to try to figure it all out.
Aside from the mysterious mystery mystering, I loved how multilingual it was. I counted 10 languages spoken throughout the show, with many of the characters speaking at least 2 languages. It was music to my ears and made for some lovely and powerful scenes where people were connecting emotionally across language bariers.
Also, wow, the lighting is so dark I had to turn off the living room lights to see stuff. Not a fan of this trend.
I did love the ship interiors and the costumes so much. The sleeves, excellent, so puffy.
Spoilers from here on, don’t say I didn’t warn you, wordpress is refusing to work with me
These are my reactions as I was watching, spoiler thoughts from the first 3 episodes:
- I love how everyone speaks their own language but looks like angry pregnant woman is universal, tall Spanish dude knows exactly why she’s mad
- I love these songs but kinda anachronistic
- It’s like these people existing before TV never saw a horror movie, do not go to the creepy ghost ship
Spoiler thoughts from ep 4-7:
- This show keeps making less and less sense and I love it
- There is def something fishy with this music and I’m starting to think the theme song is a hint
- Oh my, the dude with the mechanical blackberry just took out a battery flashlight and that’s somehow weirder than the portals
- Wait a minute, flashlight, TV screens! The songs do fit the time, some time, one time! This is timey whimey
- Ok but my only complaint was that it didn’t really feel like there were 1500 passengers on the ship and this ep neatly solves that
- Omg first mate also has a blackberry he was in on it all along
- Evil daddy is in Andor and has a similar uniform so I can only assume this is in fact a Star War
- Daniel is like “I came here to brood and be suspicious “ “I could tell you useful info but I’d rather just be ominous”
- French woman with the suspicious earrings and bug on her collar having a little feminist moment
- Nobody’s flying this plane! Real priest and fake priest trying to figure out how to steer the ship! And they put lorem ipsum in the matrix manuals
- Ugh I already didn’t like evil daddy he didn’t need to go on about emotional decisions
- I think up until the last 2 or so episodes it did a really good job of balancing the mystery of the ship with the mystery of everyone’s secrets
Before seeing the final episode my best guess for the explanation was Inception in Wonderland, with some Matrix and Westworld thrown in, which was pretty right, I did not see that final scene coming at all, and I think the way they played around with who’s dream is it anyway worked very well. I do still have SO MANY questions and I really hope it gets a second season. And I’d love to know more about all the other characters real lives too.
I’ve never even heard of this, but now I’m curious and want to check it out. It sounds nuts!
This sounds like an excellent show. And now that I have stopped binge-watching Stranger Things — exactly what I should watch next. Also, just like Anne Shirley and you, I love puffed sleeves too, haha.
Yes! My thoughts exactly! Have you seen the show Dark? Also on Netflix and done by 1899’s creators. I loved everything about it. As long as we get a conclusion to this whole thing. Like is her brother really evil? Why are they where they are? Did he hijack the original goal? We need answers!!!!
I don’t watch a lot of shows but this sounds like something I should check out. Thanks for sharing your thoughts – I hadn’t heard of it before.
