Short read-what-you-already-own update & looking for recs of 2020 books

Crushed under the weight of my TBR, I decided that this is the year I read what I already own. This was before shit hit the fan of course. So, now I’ve done a tally, and I think I’ve been a good enough little reader that I can pause this challenge and support some authors and bookstores.

2020 books so far are looking pretty good, if I do say so myself:

  • Read books: 29
  • Already owned (purchased before 2020): 22 (75%)
  • New: 7, of which 3 were sequels to already owned books

I’m also doing pretty good on the bought but not read front: 7 books paid for (1 is the audiobook for The Hanged Man of which I’d had an ARC); 3 free books.

I’ve been on a pretty strict comfort reads diet, and going almost exclusively for books I knew I’d like. I’d planned to list a few favorites from reads so far, but uh, derp on the “few” bit. Still: The Bone Ships, Monstress, Red White & Royal Blue, Murderbot, Queens of the Wyrd, The Calculating Stars & The Fated Sky, Realm of Ash, The Demons We See & The Nightmare We Know, The Curse of Chalion, The Ten Thousand Doors of January, Reaper Man, Snow, Glass, Apples, The Magpie Lord. (links are to reviews, where I have them already posted)

I know others have also set up to conquer the ol’ already owned pile, so, how’s it going?

I was planning to keep going with the what-I-already-own theme, but feel like this is a bad year to suddenly stop buying books, so looking to throw some support around. I’m mostly looking for 2020 debuts or releases, or at the very least not popular recs. If it’s a very popular book I’ve either read it, or I’m actively avoiding it.

Things I like:

  • hopeful/optimistic
  • characters to root for
  • not set on the background of a pandemic, I cannot stress this enough
  • humor
  • experimental
  • interesting storytelling devices
  • pretty prose
  • interesting settings
  • happy LGTB+ things
  • dragons, cats (no animal deaths pls though)
  • prefer shorter books atm
  • translations and books otherwise outside the UK/US zone welcome
  • I also love bingo, so if things fit squares that’s a big plus

So yeah, if you’ve got’em, hit me with those recs!

PS: lemme know if you rec has a good audio version

PPS: yes, I know I’m a blogger and I could hop on NetGalley or Edelweiss and get some stuff but there is no way in hell I can handle the pressure of a deadline right now. I’d been planning on just that post-2019-bingo, but then *gestures at the world*
