It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week.  This meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

What I read last week:

I couldn’t get much sleep last week and was in desperate need of distraction for glum thoughts, so I tore through books.

Planetfall by Emma Newman I’d started last month and had been slowly reading, I finally finished it on Sunday, it was a great book but the mental health parts made it hard to deal with.

Dread Nation by Justina Ireland I picked up for the Black Lives Matter bingo, but I was a little on the fence about it because I don’t normally love YA nor zombies. Well, I loved this book, read 85% of it in one day, couldn’t put it down, loved the main character.

Spirit Caller by Krista D. Ball was a known quantity comfort read that I’ve been saving for a rainy day and it delivered plenty of comfort. Full review coming this week.

Penric’s Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold was funny, cause I knew I would love it, based on loving every Bujold I’d tried and everyone saying I would. So I went in knowing nothing about the book and was taken completely by surprise, that was great fun.

What I’m reading now:

Kalpa Imperial by Angelica Gorodischer is the r/fantasy Goodreads Book of the Month pick. It’s lovely but I’m totally not in the mood for it, so going slowly. It’s a collection of stories really and I’m currently a little burned out on short fiction.

Same for Taina Sfinxului de pe Marte by Viorica Huber, also a collection of short stories about a civilization, that I’m not in the mood for and reading very slowly.

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin I’m listening to on audiobook, the audio is very good by the way. The book is great too, but also not horribly in the mood for so much PoV switching, and with working from home I’m not getting a lot of audio time.

Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi I just started on Sunday and already read half of it, might finish today. Long live novellas. The vignettes being very short means that this one is actually working very well for me. I can’t really tell what it is building up towards.

Up next:

I’m not one of those super-organized people who plans what book I’ll read next, but I am trying to read what I own, so from my kindle I think I’ll go for one of these

Last week on the blog:

What are you reading?

I read a few Lois McMaster Bujold books years ago but didn’t really get too far into the series. I should get back to her books one day.

Hope some more books catch your attention this week.

She’s quickly become one of my favorites ever, I try to not read too many of her books per year so I dont run out

  2. I loved Riot Baby too! I really want to read The City We Became, I’m curious to hear your thoughts😁

    1. Dianthaa says:

I was really worried I wouldn’t like Riot Baby, but it seems my tastes have expanded to fully all over the place lol

  3. Kathy Martin says:

I am a big fan of Lois McMaster Bujold. I have read all her books at least once and some of them too many times to count. Also, I have Dread Nation on my Kindle but the zombies are holding me back. I really don’t like zombie books. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    1. Dianthaa says:

I’m trying to trickle my Bujolds so I don’t run out too fast, but audible just let me download a bunch of them for free so uh… so much for that plant
There was a lot less goryness than I was expecting, but there were a few scenes with lots of zombies that got pretty nasty

  4. I was also skeptical of Dread Nation, but I really liked it. I’m still on a waitlist for Riot Baby. I’ll get to it eventually. Have a great week!

    1. Dianthaa says:

Do you follow the tor.com bookclub? Riot Baby was free last week that’s how I ended up reading it

  5. Hope the books continue to keep glum thoughts at bay. It is hard to sometimes decide on what to read next isn’t it. At times I am writing up the post and I think – “I really don’t know what I want to read next!”

    1. Dianthaa says:

I swear it sometimes takes me longer too pick a book than to read one lol

  6. Donna says:

I haven’t heard of any of these books or the authors. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Dianthaa says:

Nice! I hope some of them peak your interest
