It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week. This meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.
What I read last week:
Last week was pretty slow reading-wise, first week at work after our two weeks off and it showed. About mid-week, I started playing The Outer Wilds and became mildly obsessed with the game so I spent all weekend doing that, it’s been ages since I’ve been this into a game, so that was lots of fun.
Zami, A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde read for the Tarot Black Lives Matter Book Bingo challenge (challenge info, my reading plans), for the HERMIT: biography square. I don’t read much non-spec fic, even less non-fic, so this was way out of my comfort zone. I really liked it, Audre Lorde is a poet and that shown through beautifully in the writing. I also kept having weird disconects remembering these events weren’t plot points just actual (often shitty) events in someone’s life.
Mem by Bethany C. Morrow, also a BLM Bingo pick, for TEMPERANCE: set during the 1920s-1930s. I listened to it in audiobook and really liked it, a lot of interesting ideas about self and personhood. Did not come even close to seeing the big reveal at the end, but really liked where it went.
The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz our September HEA bookclub pick on r/fantasy, a really short and sweet novella. It’s very slice of life, features a lot of tea drinking and a lovely ace f/f human/AI love story.
What I’m reading now:
Dune by Frank Herbert – a reread because I loved the movie trailer. I loved Dune when I read it as a kid, I have strong memories of fun desert action and sandworms. About a third into the book and so far it’s been overwhelmingly people talking. Now I’ve got nothing against people talking, but very pissy at the lack of sandworms. This is going incredibly slow, and the very pretty but very heavy hardback I’ve got isn’t helping.
Od Magic by Patricia McKillip – audiobook, got it through the audible plus thing. Really enjoying McKillip’s style, not entirely sure where the book is going but so far it’s a lovely place to be.
Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson – reading for the WHEEL OF FORTUNE: theme of “actions have consequences” square on the BLM Bingo. Only just started it but I really like the setting and the main character’s magic gift seems really promising.
Up next:
On kindle I want to pick up another book from my Self-Published Fantasy Month TBR I’ve only read one so far (Demon Haunted by Ashe Armstrong) and we’re running out of month, but I don’t know if I’ll be in more of a reading mood than last week.
On audio I’ll probably pick up A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow, it’s my last owned audiobook for the BLM Bingo, New Atlantis: urban fantasy square.
In print I’ll be reading for the BLM Bingo, I’ve got The Vanished Birds here and some recent releases that should be arriving this week. I’m most excited for Raybearer.

Interesting assortment of books. All of them are new to me. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
I really should read Dune, it’s one of those books that has been on my TBR list forever. Happy reading.
I read Dune so long ago that I only remember the general story of it. As for what I’m reading now, finally got around to checking out Rage of Dragons and I’m enjoying it so far.
