13 SciFi Audiobooks I recommended to my dad

I haven’t been around much because I’ve been working on StabbyCon r/Fantasy‘s online convention! It runs till Feb 11th, we have a brilliant line-up. I’d love it if you checked it out, here’s the full schedule and following us on twitter will get you links to everything once we post it. It’s all Reddit text posts.

My dad’s always been into Spec Fic, when I was a teen we both read all the Harry Potters, the Hunger Games, and even the Twilight Books together, and then went to see the movies. But then we kinda spotted talking about books at some point until I realized I could share my kindle and audible library with him. He doesn’t usually listen as obsessively as I do, but he just binged the entire Old Man’s War series by John Scalzi over the last few months and asked me for more recs.

Now, if you know me at all you know I cannot pick just one book, so I made a list, from my library. (links go to audible, I don’t have any referrals or anything I just wanted him to be able to find them easily)

Shards of Honor  By: Lois McMaster Bujold – and the whole Vorkosigan saga. It’s much fun and the sort of funny action-adventure story I’m sure he’d love.
All Systems Red By: Martha Wells – Murderbot Diaries – this was my first rec, but now I admit I’m having my doubts. My dad is an extrovert and I realized Murderbot might be too close to the very introverted parts of me that he just doesn’t get.
Children of Time By: Adrian Tchaikovsky – what’s not to love about the history of an alien spider civilization-building itself?

The Calculating Stars A Lady Astronaut Novel By: Mary Robinette Kowal – I did rec this with a warning that the beginning is very emotionally tough, but I think he’d like the early space era

Lightless by: C. A. Higgins – I only recently finally got round to this, after friends have been recommending it for ages. It’s fun, gripping, and very compact and easy to follow with such a small crew.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet – Wayfarers, Book 1 – By: Becky Chambers – I think he’d like the wholesomeness of these books, and they’re also easy to follow
We Are Legion (We Are Bob) Bobiverse, Book 1 By: Dennis E. Taylor – The kind of dorky humor I know my dad would like, and the whole series is lots of fun, I like how it does so many different aspects of SF
Escaping Exodus By: Nicky Drayden – Truly unique book, set inside a massive space-fearing creature. I think the unusual society and family structure might be a little challenging for him but I am really curious how he takes it if gives it a try.
Will Save the Galaxy for Food By: Yahtzee Croshaw – fun adventure comedy
Fuzzy Nation By: John Scalzi – I figure he already likes Scalzi so this one is a pretty sure bet
Dawn – Xenogenesis, Book 1 -By: Octavia E. Butler – Is this list making me go “damn I need to finish that series for every other book? yes. yes it is” This book was so good, I think it’s less actiony and light that he might be in the mood for, but it’s so good
Red Rising By: Pierce Brown – He loved Hunger Games, this starts out as Hunger Games in space, no brainer rec.
Binti By: Nnedi Okorafor – I think he’ll like this cause it’s short and smart, and I doubt he’s read much non-eurocentric spec fic.

I love Bujold’s work — but somehow didn’t think to try the audiobook version of Cordelia’s Honor/ Shards of Honor. Also good to know that Dawn has a solid audiobook, been meaning to try that book for a long time now.
