I got A LOT of reading done this month, but most of it was just trying to distract myself from some sad news. My cat, Misa, died, she was 14 but it was still really quick and unexpected. I’ve also been successfully planning out blog posts and then actually posting them This is very novel for me.

On the blog

Reviews Posted

  • Stormsong by C.L. Polk – I loved the tight plot and the politics in this book
  • The Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey + Lirael by Garth Nix – WHY HAVE I NEVER READ VALDEMAR BEFORE? , Lirael left me whelmed
  • A Blade so Black by L.L. McKinley and The Utterly Uninteresting Adventures of Fred, the Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes – both books where a lot of fun
  • Rosewater by Tade Thompson – very interesting setting of alien contact

Books read

  • The Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey
  • The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey
  • Rosewater by Tade Thompson
  • Planetfall by Emma Newman
  • A Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope
  • A Ghostly Request by Krista D. Ball
  • Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
  • Spirit Caller books 4-6 by Krista D. Ball
  • Penric’s Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold
  • Kalpa Imperial: The Greatest Empire That Never Was by Angélica Gorodischer

Read what you own

… errm about that. It was clear when I started the BLM Bingo that wouldn’t work with reading what I already owned as I owned very few books by Black authors. So I might have gone on a little spree. Whooops sorry not sorry

Ordered in paperback:
  • Zami: A New Spelling of my Name By Audre Lorde – HERMIT: biography bingo square
  • Brown Girl In The Ring By Nalo Hopkinson – WHEEL OF FORTUNE: theme of “actions have consequences”
  • The Vanished Birds By  Simon Jimenez – MISFIT: featuring found family
  • Maya and the Rising Dark By Rena Barron – EMPEROR: father MC or father-child relationship
  • A Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals By Alyssa Cole – JUDGEMENT: book wtih an overused trope
  • Raybearer By Jordan Ifueko – DEATH: book published after 7/1/2020
  • Legendborn By Tracy Deonn – HIEROPHANT: coming of age or YA contemporary
New on my kindle:

I only bought two kindle titles and read both of them already, so in that aspect,I’ve been sticking to my plan:

  • The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy Omnibus by Mercedes Lackey
  • Kalpa Imperial: The Greatest Empire That Never Was by Angélica Gorodischer, for the r/fantasy Goodreads book of the month book club.
  • I also got and started reading Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi, which was a Tor bookclub offer this month.
Audible, these don’t count, do they?

I didn’t buy anything on audible. Mostly because I used up my remaining credits back in July. But. But, they have a new audible plus thing, with a lot of free books, and I downloaded a bunch of those (in case they change their minds ok, I don’t really trust audible but most other services aren’t as internationally available). So from the plus catalog I got:

  • 18 books by Lois McMaster Bujold, including Penric novellas, Vorkosigan books and The Sharing Knife.
  • An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
  • Od Magic by Patricia McKillip
  • Dreamsnake by Vonda N. McIntyre
  • Wolf Moon: Book 2 of Luna by Ian MCDonald
  • Mem by Bethany C Morrow
  • Imaro by Charles Saunders
  • In Calabria by Peter S. Beagle
  • The Galaxy Game by Karen Lord
  • Stories of the Raksura, Book 1 by Martha Wells
  • Stories of the Raksura, Volume 2: The Dead City & the Dark Earth Below by Martha Wells

  1. Oh I’m so sorry to hear about your cat! Losing a pet is always hard, but especially when they’ve been part of your family for so long. Sending you hugs!

I keep hearing so many good things about Emma Newman’s sci-fi and yet I still haven’t read any of her work. That’s something I need to change asap…

      Thank you
Planetfall was so good, I really recommend it, it’s not an easy read, though it starts that way, when we get into mental health territory it hits hard

  2. Donna says:

It looks like you had a good reading month. I’m sorry about your cat. My dog died in January and I still miss him so much. Especially working from home now, he would have loved me being home with him all the time. Check out my monthly wrap-up

    1. Dianthaa says:

Thank you, and sorry to hear about your dog too. I’m struggling with working from home now too because she’s not here to constantly beg for cuddles anymore, our other cat comes to chill with me, which helps a little

  3. Danielle Hammelef says:

I’m so sorry about Misa! Animals leave forever imprints on our hearts. You did have an excellent book and blog month and I’m glad books have been helping you through your grief.
