Mistcloak Cosplay from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

This is my “random noblewoman” Cosplay mistcloak from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I really wanted to cosplay a character from a fantasy book and this was really the obvious choice for something easily recognizable.

For full artistic freedom, she lives sometime between era 1 and era 2, just so I could go with the kind of fashion I fancied.

I made this Mistcloak last year for the London  MCM Comic-Con, and was planning to get some nicer pictures taken this year at the Bucharest EECC Comic-Con. Since that’s not happening anytime soon, decided Wyrd & Wonder might be as good a time as any to post it.

I really wanted a recognizable bookish cosplay, so I think mistcloak was a pretty obvious choice. And the subway convo on the way back to the con about whether Mistborn is a good intro to reading books by Sanderson was proof that it did work.

Cosplay: Mistcloak from Mistborn, you can probably tell by now, I was very into the wind whipping my tassles around, here I'm gazing contemplatively at the ground while it does so

Underneath I’m wearing my older D’n’D/WoW/generic rogue/assassin gear. And learning the valuable lesson that black on black on black doesn’t photograph well.

I really wanted to have a cloak that floats and has a lot of movement. So I’ve got about 400-500 strips of organza. It did work out, there was a fair bit of curling and swaying in a light breeze, and madness in strong wind.

Another thing I wanted to get right was for the cloak to fall off in a fight if necessary. After a lot trying to figure out quick-release clasps, I decided to ditch them altogether. I just used a thick net-like fabric that had enough body to stay on, despite not being held there by anything.

Of course I made a couple of allomancy vials and a coin purse. I broke one of the vials first thing in the morning, it slid out when I was sitting down.

Here’s a sketch of how we came up with the pattern, a friend helped me out and we rotated the parts from a simple basic pattern, to get the neckline right. Then we drew the outer edge based on how long we wanted it to be, but we didn’t go for a circle as I didn’t want to add too much volume. There was initially meant to be a smaller capelet on top, I ended up not using it, but it was about the same shape as the big capelet.

Adding in a few more movement pictures, please excuse my tired-end-of-con face

That’s about it for my Cosplay mistcloak from Mistborn, let me know if you’ve got any other bookish cosplay ideas for me, I really loved going for this theme.

I love your cosplay! The detail on it is amazing. Plus book cosplays are always so much fun ❤ I haven’t read the mistborn series yet but your cosplay makes me want to.

    1. Dianthaa says:

Thank you so much! It was a lot of fun trying to figure out how to make it match the book. I really need to see more book cosplays, I love the idea of interpreting things my way.

  5. Wendy McGee says:

How do the ribbons lay when it’s not windy? Do they curl up a bunch or do they lay down pretty well? I want to make a mistcloak for my husband and ribbon sounds better and lighter than using all fabric.

    1. Dianthaa says:

They lay down mostly, some curling and swooshing at the ends. Escalators, stairs and chairs had to be handled with caution, but I expect that would apply for other fabrics too
